8. WATSON

Inspector Gregson wrote furiously on his notepad. Then he set down the telephone. His look was grim. “The robbers want a carriage and horses brought to the rear of the bank and they demand that the police pull back from the perimeter to allow them to escape. Otherwise they will kill all the hostages. One man has already been wounded. The woman who spoke with me—a young lady, I think—gave a quite detailed description of his medical condition.”

“Was she one of the robbers?”

“Assuredly not. She was talking to someone who was giving her instructions. She said her name was Miss Lucy Manette. Sounded scared to death, poor girl. Although she did let it slip that there are twelve other people and that they’re all apparently being held in the lobby, under guard. And that the name of the man who’s been shot is George Parker.”

“That seems a substantive amount of information to have been conveyed by a scared young woman. Precisely what did she say about the wounded man?”

Gregson consulted his notes. “Some medical gibberish. She said the bullet entered Mr. Parker’s armis quattuor and may have nicked the custodiet et fores artery. He also may have salvum tergo fenestras.”

Holmes shot me a meaningful look. “Miss Manette, whomever she may be, has a high degree of intelligence and a great deal of presence of mind. As Watson here will tell you, those Latin phrases are not anatomical terms. They are a message. In Latin, she has just told us that there are four armed gunmen inside, that they are guarding the doors, and that the windows at the back of the building ought to be safe to approach.”

I saw my duty immediately. “I will go. I am not in uniform. I shall enter through one of the rear windows. If I am caught, I shall pretend to be a customer that the gang has previously overlooked.”
